“People laughed at YouTube”

I’m sitting in San Francisco at the Startup Camp 2 meeting. It’s off to an auspicious start– the CEO of Sun (Jonathan Schwartz) is on stage and has just reminded us that people laughed at YouTube– until it was acquired for $1.6B.

He thinks that the difference from 5 years ago is that the internet is truly global, although it’s still divided by language and culture. He cited the significant difference in mobile usage around the world as one example.

So how does a service reach a tipping point? We’ll see what insights I glean from today’s conference.
